view from streetThe Inn at the Canal is known locally as the Brady-Rees house. Built in 1868, the Brady-Rees house is listed on the Maryland and National Historic Registers. The Bradys owned and operated a fleet of tugboats that traveled the canal, and as such were a successful part of this waterfront community. History has it that Mr. & Mrs. Brady were the proud parents of two daughters; but Henry Brady promised his wife a new, grand home should she present him with a son. This lovely home was built as a result of that fulfilled promise, and many of the fine architectural and decorative details remain.

The Victorian Gothic style home is a two-and-a-half story, five-bay brick dwelling covered with German siding. The steeply pitched roof, broken by a wide cross gable on the front, is covered with decorative slate shingles. At the apex of the roof are two chimneys, one retaining an original terra-cotta chimney pot.

Henry Brady's officeAdjacent to this house is the only 19th century private office surviving in Chesapeake City. Built as Henry Brady's office, it later served Ralph Reese as an insurance and magistrate's office. The square structure has a low-pitched roof and a porch across the front. The framed walls are filled with brick nogging and covered with tapered weatherboard. The interior retains some oak wainscoting and other oak trim.

Victorian fretworkMany of the original features of the home have been preserved including original coal fireplaces and painted ceilings in the parlor and dining room. Of special note is the ornately painted ceiling in the parlor as it is one of the most complete painted ceilings from that era.

gardenWhen Mary and Al Ioppolo found the inn in 1989, it was already partially restored. They added two more guest rooms, restored the guest parlor and the milking room, and improved the inn's exterior and landscaping. A lovely garden with brick patio and walkways now extends beyond the long, two story side porch into the grassy back yard.
